Selected Stockhausen Scores

These examples have been selected purely for their graphical interest.
The 'small' examples and most of the 'detail's fit on a 17" monitor. The 'large' examples are sometimes very large (be warned!).1

SIRIUS
This is a mobile score containing several booklets. The sequence of booklets is fixed for a particular performance. I have included this as an example of my early handwriting.

TRANS
This is an example of a 'Notaset' score. Notaset was like Letraset with music symbols (I used to buy it at Boosey & Hawkes in London). The whole score was done on transparencies with 'rastal 5'-size noteheads.

LUZIFERs TANZ from SAMSTAG aus LICHT
German Music Publishers' Association Prize 1992.
This is a large score with many photographs of the first performances. Stockhausen composed it using a collage technique, while David Posnett and I copied the parts. Both the score and parts contain many photocopies fragilely stuck together. I was later responsible for correcting the originals according to the many changes made during the rehearsals, and for preparing the score for final publication.

Xi for a melody instrument with microtones
This contains three abstract 'models' of the piece - Models A, B and C. Model A was newly written in FreeHand, but the other two are reproduced from my manuscripts in the scores of Xi for Bassethorn and Xi for Alto Flute or Flute. This score shows clearly that my style has not changed as a result of working with computers. Working with FreeHand, and my own Xtras, has enabled me to preserve my graphic identity. I think all publishers should have their own 'house style' - think of those wonderful old Breitkopf and UE scores...

Xi for Bassethorn
Susanne Stephens' realisation of Stockhausen's Xi for a melody instrument with microtones. Reproduced from my manuscript, this shows standard music notation pushed to its limits. One of my last handwritten scores.

Xi for Alto Flute or Flute
Kathinka Pasveer's realisation of Stockhausen's Xi for a melody instrument with microtones. Reproduced from my manuscript, this shows standard music notation pushed to its limits. One of my last handwritten scores.

YPSILON for a melody instrument with microtones
A very 'graphic' score (2 pages of music) written in FreeHand.
The seven line staff has no clef, and denotes a small pitch range containing intervals which are as small as possible, but clearly audible. The player has small Indian bells, attached all over his/her body, notated on the single line at the top.

FREITAG-VERSUCHUNG (This is the score of FREITAG aus LICHT.)
The score contains an extensive foreword, a translation into English of the German instructions in the score, many colour photographs of the performances at the Leipzig Opera House (1996), 64 pages of Stockhausen's manuscript and 73 pages of music which I copied in FreeHand.
Michael Manion did most of the initial Finale work on this score.
My FreeHand pages are the electronic music (which is continuous throughout the piece) and the 'sound scenes' which intersperse the 'real scenes' (Stockhausen's manuscript). These pages are very complex, containing many diagrams, graphic notations etc., and up to 28 staves.

WELT-PARLAMENT from MITTWOCH aus LICHT
German Music Publishers' Association Prize 1997.
Michael Manion entered the notes in Finale, and helped me do the initial work in FreeHand. I did the colours, and all the corrections prior to publication. Note the zig-zag beaming. It was a pity that I didnt have time to replace all Finale's slurs and ties with more beautiful ones of my own...

MONTAG aus LICHT (unpublished 1999)
This is currently in production (1999). Each of the three acts will be published in a separate volume. The music will be reproduced as facsimiles of Stockhausen's and my manuscripts. The originals date from before the Stockhausen-Verlag started working with computers.
Because of their sheer size, these scores have forced the Verlag to upgrade its hard- and software. We have got to redo a lot of the spacing, to fit these scans optimally on the new format, and do the final corrections. Lilly Fritz has done the original scanning, and is cleaning and separating the scans for my further use. We are using Photoshop (and FreeHand).

MICHAELION from MITTWOCH aus LICHT (unpublished 1999)
MITTWOCH aus LICHT is scheduled for staged performances at the Bonn opera house in the year 2000. This score, copied by me in FreeHand, has 131 pages, each of which has ca 20 staves. It will be published after the Bonn performances, so that all the last-minute changes can be made.

Bassetsu-Trio (unpublished 1999)
A small score (10 pages of music, and a foreword). This began life as part of MICHAELION, which is part of MITTWOCH aus LICHT. I have dissected this page in more detail in A closer look at Stockhausen's Bassetsu-Trio.

Footnote on image quality (2000)
These images are all in GIF format, produced by FreeHand and/or Photoshop.
They are subject to the usual limitations of 72 dpi images intended for screen viewing. For example, in many of the FreeHand examples, staves have differing space heights and/or line thicknesses (1 or 2 pixels) in the image. This is because the original lines were either on or between output pixels. There are also a number of slightly slanted lines with a jagged appearance resulting from the low resolution. (I've tweaked some of FreeHand's GIFs in Photoshop, using Extensis' Intellihance filter, but there are limits on the results which can be achieved.)
Printed music actually requires a much higher resolution than I can give here - 72 dpi grayscale images are no substitute for strictly black-and-white printed images at ca. 2540 dpi. Imagine reading photographs of small printed words...
So, if you like what you see, and want to see it better, I can only recommend that you buy a score!

Thanks (2000)
My thanks go to Jorge Franganillo for telling me how to solve a problem I was having with the following files:
FREITAG-VERSUCHUNG, page 94 (large)
FREITAG-VERSUCHUNG, page 125 (large)
In the original versions of these files, Netscape used to miss out some of the stafflines, and I didnt know why.
The GIFs contained by these files are 2092 pixels high, but the web-site editor I was using only allowed me to enter GIF heights up to 2000 pixels. I therefore wrongly assumed that 2000 pixels was a general limit and allowed the images to be squashed vertically. Netscape supresses the extra 92 lines in this situation, while Explorer makes a new interpolation of the image.
I've now corrected the heights in the html files, using a text editor, and the problem has gone away.
